Quite a bit of work - you'd need a LOT of missions, one for each ship the
player can own; from all these the mission to give back the ship would be
selected (it could be an invisible mission - no need to force the player to
go and pick it up, which he might not want to do anyway).
And you'd need to make sure that each ship sets a unique bit when bought
and unsets it when retired, so the missions (above) can test for their
unique bit.
Equipment would be too hard, I think - there's surely no way to keep track
of how many items of each type one has?
So you'd need some part of the story to explain why the items have been
stolen or something...
But it's a good idea, and not beyond the realms of doability.
