I'd say a race of honorable yet savage warriors is just about one of the 
most cliched things in science fiction at this point.  Just having 
tattoos doesn't make them Maowri, and even if they were, do we want to 
have all the races be real ethnic groups from the present day grafted on 
to spaceships?   They're nearly carbon copies of klingons, wookies, etc 
etc. (which I suppose were in turn probably inspired by this "noble 
savage" hogwash surrounding peoples like the Maowri)  Babylon 5 probably 
has a race like that too, but I haven't watched the show much.

For evidence see the government hail string of one of the Auroran 
factions:

"Today, like all days, is a good day to die." 

  It's that klingon saying but with a qualification ("like all days") 
added on that ruins the ring of it.
