I haven't played EV enough to know, but will pirates attack escorts 
before they attack the host ship? If they don't, the only way to provoke 
a pirate ship would be to program in little invisble damageless blanks 
that the escorts would shoot, to keep fire concentrated on themselves. 
Of course, this would just be a cheap way to simulate the effect, and 
their presence would be undocumented... just a way to bypass the engine.
