 Hrm... as sick as I'm getting from reading about holographic ships...
it's possible to explain why they don't "pass through" in the dėsc (they
are still dėscs, aren't they?). Perhaps the holograms utilize force-fields
to simulate a more realistic effect. After all, it wouldn't take you long
to realize your mistake if you fired on something and your shots
immediately passed through it, without causing any damage.
