Sounds like your values within the shan resource are not correct.  Shan 
resources point to rle8/rled/pict resources, and then tell the engine 
how to manipulate those images when called upon by ship resources.  To 
display a ship in-game, you must have a ship and a shan resource whose 
id's are identical.  If you want variants, you must duplicate shans (as 
has been done in the Nova datafiles).

So it sounds like the values in your shan resource are what is causing 
the problem.  The reason being is that the ship/shan resource does work, 
because it does so for the Nova scenario itself.
