According to the Nova Bible, 64 is indeed the max number of ships in a
system. That isn't the issue here, though.
The bible indicates that the "Max Shots On Screen" is 128, in addition to a
maximum of 64 beams on screen. This is interesting, since there can be
shots in the system that aren't on the screen (unlike asteroids, which are
only on the screen). Makes you wonder what would happen if an AI ship
tried to fire a few hundred shots at you from off-screen...
I don't happen to know what the limit was in the old EV engine, but I do
know that when two of the infamous Golem Battlestations from my 'Rochester'
plug-in got into a fight, they quite easily hit that limit. Then again, I
did give it a mass driver turret with a delay of 1. If you had the tractor
beam, you could kill Alien Fighters with that thing. =)
