I disagree. There are plenty of shareware companies that do just fine
making Mac-only games. Ambrosia probably wished to expand -- as do most
businesses -- and saw the PC market as the easiest way to do that.

In this way your example is very true: Blizzard, like Ambrosia, would
certainly survive, cross-platform games or not.[1]

[1] Disclaimer: I know nothing about Ambrosia's finances. Maybe they did
hit hard times or something, but I doubt it; considering how long
they've been around, they seem quite stable.
