Answering Besomega's question regarding the wings texture on vello's ships:

My approach to this would be applying a volumetric texture, not a solid 
one, and animating this volumetric texture so that it gives the glowing 
illusion like in vello's ships.
I don't know what 3D program you use, but generally speaking, i would 
duplicate the wings and give them (to the duplicates) a volumetric texture 
taking into account parameters like fuzziness, base density, transparency, 
color difussion and ambience color: These parameters allow the creation of 
volumertric stuff like clouds, smog, laser beams, etc. Since you are 
applying this texture to a copy of your wing, that is, same shape as the 
wing, which sits in the same position of the original wing beneath it, you 
will notice how a glowing "object" or "aura" appears around the wing when 
you start tweaking the volumetric texture parameters. Transparency will 
show through the solid wing beneath the glow.

This same principle is applied to creating the glowing aura of planets, for 
instance. You have a sphere that acts like the planet and a copy of the 
sphere, slightly larger, with a volumetric texture. If i wanted to give my 
ships an aura, like the Vello's, i would start from there. Hope it helps! 
Of couse, if anybody has a better idea, let us all know! I just did a fast 
render of what i just explained to a cube and it kinda works.

PD: Another thing i suggest is go to the ATMOS website and ask the good 
talented people there how they created those glows and the effects on 
Polaris ships which i personally find fascinating!
